Myopia in children

Nearsightedness (myopia) is becoming more common and at an increasingly younger age. The degree of myopia is also becoming more extreme. Researchers are even speaking of a myopia epidemic. The fact that more and more children are unable to see as well in the distance is due in part to a lot of close viewing on screens.1 Once nearsighted, always nearsighted. So the sooner it is recognized and limited, the better. Fortunately, there are ways to inhibit nearsightedness and to take care of children's eyes.

Tip 1: Recognize it

Your child won’t always recognize nearsightedness. But perhaps you recognize (one of) the following symptoms: headaches or “tired eyes,” sitting close to the TV or computer, frequent rubbing of the eyes. These are just a few examples of symptoms.

Tip 2: Lifestyle

Let children play outside enough (at least two hours a day), and don’t allow them to use their eyes only close up for too much and for too long at a time. The Eye Foundation (Oogfonds) has come up with the handy 20-20-2 rule for this.

Tip 3: Have them checked

Have your child’s eyes checked regularly by a specialist. Is your child nearsighted? There are various “myopia management” therapies available, such as lifestyle counseling, atropine eye drops and special contact lenses.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Having trouble reading the fine print? Don’t worry, almost everyone faces this. It’s called presbyopia and usually begins around the age of 40. This is especially noticeable while reading or working at close range. Choose multifocal contact lenses. You’ll see sharply all day long, both far and near.

Vision Correction

Sight is made possible through a fascinating process between your eyes and your brain. It’s not surprising to learn that it takes a medical device – such as contact lenses – to correct vision conditions like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. In this section you’ll learn more about common vision conditions and how contact lenses may help.
